What are good questions to use for a pro stem cell debate team?
In school my class is doing debates and i need to know some good questions to ask the opposing team. I am on the Pro- stem cell team.
Stem cells are usually associated with embryonic stem cells. As harvesting embryonic stem cells involve culturing embryos
which may lead to the death of a large number of “potential human beings”, it is considered unethical.
The ethical questions can be countered by stating the fact that naturally, many embryos do get destroyed in the uterus.
Ethics has always been an important issue. But, looking back, one may realize that what is considered unethical a few decades back is now perfectly ethical.
Contraception is one example.
When Anton von Leewenhoek first observed sperm cells under his microscope he was unsure whether to disclose his findings. He thought it may lead to people trying to interfere with the process of child birth. Now, contraception is widely popular and even recommended throughout the world.
But, stem cells are not restricted only to embryonic stem cells. There are others such as the ones we get from umblical cord fluid….
What makes stemcells more important is the fact that it can potentially cure so many diseases!
Having said these, I think the following questions are appropriate….
Do you want to remain a mute spectator when so many of our fellow citizens die of parkinson’s, alzheimer’s, sclerosis and other dreaded disease…… especially when you have all the technologies you need to cure them of these diseases?
Do you want to wait for a few more decades exploring alternate non-stemcell cures for the diseases and kill millions across the world in the process???
You are more concerned about the embryos that you cannot even see without a microscope but you are worried about those who are suffering from untold miseries because of these diseases which are perfectly curable by stem cell technologies????
I’m assuming you are a science student here!!!
Being a science student, don’t you have any optimism that this technology will be perfected within a few years when given an opportunity????
Hope this helps…
Good Luck!
